Theatre Communications Group celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. TCG is encouraging members to discuss the future of theater by exploring “what the field has achieved, the challenges we face in this moment, and where we hope theatre will be in 50 years.”
The annual conference takes place this week in Los Angeles and the theme is: “What if…?”
Engine28 gathered some “What ifs” from the theater community.
Ralph Remington, NEA director, theater and musical theater, speaking for himself and not for the NEA: “What if…we had more than three artistic directors of LORT theaters…and right now, there are only three artistic directors of color.”
Mercedes Armillas, New York: “What if… every theater could have their own home?”
Nicki Genovese, California: “I think the exciting thing about having its own home would be that it would allow artistic leaders and it would allow managing leaders to create work that they felt really was theirs. And they wouldn’t have the worry of, ‘Where are we going to find a space to present? Where are we going to find a space to produce?’ And it would relieve a lot of the stress that a lot of leaders have. So I think that would be a wonderful thing if everybody had its own artistic home.”
Kenneth Lin, New York: “What if…we had a lot more examples of good dramatic criticism, to go along with all the bad examples of dramatic criticism that we’re seeing all the time?”
Ron House, California: “That would be wonderful if we could. I doubt it, but I think it would be a good idea…however, with the invent of the internet it’s a lot broader than it used to be and a lot fairer.
What if…I could make a living at theater?”
Anastasia Coon, California: “Oh, my god.” (Kerry: “How would you answer that question?”) “I would love that. What if you could actually make a living in the theater? Forget about it. That’s what I want.”
